Pairings 001
[At precisely 7 A.M. on the Peregrine's standard time, both CommLink screens and wardens' cabin control panels flicker to life with a live video stream.
The Navarch herself sits primly at a glossy black desk. She is, by Earth standards, a senior citizen, but her crisp voice and sharp eye places her nowhere near retirement. She folds her hands in front of her.]
Good morning, passengers. I trust you have settled in over the past two weeks, but now your work begins in earnest. I have arranged the first pairing assignments. For the next thirty days, wardens will be the primary point of contact for their assigned inmate, and responsible for the inmate's moral development and well-being. Inmates are also permitted to live adjacent to their warden's quarters for the duration of the pairing, if the warden deems it appropriate.
Unpaired wardens are responsible for assisting paired wardens, and should be prepared to manage any new incoming inmates.
Without further ado, here are the pairings for this month.
[She picks up her tablet off the desk and puts on her reading glasses; this is a much longer pause than it needs to be. Then she reads:]
Warden Agrias Oaks, paired with inmate Alex Mercer.
Warden Claire Frasier, paired with inmate Joshua Volkhov.
Warden James Barnes, paired with inmate Silco.
Warden Loki Odinson, paired with inmate Jinx.
Warden William Temple, paired with inmate Rhys Strongfork.
[She removes her reading glasses, folding them before stowing them away meticulously in the desk.]
As always, I will be available to wardens for questions and concerns by appointment.

I'm not a part of any sort of cult, either.

I think you should do whatever the hell you want to with your life. You're an adult. But I didn't ask to be here. The idea that I'm supposed to believe that I'm both dead and in space is fucking ridiculous. And the idea that some woman that won't speak to me and hasn't met me has decided that I got chosen because I have special potential to stop being evil, but only if I agree to let her decide what's right and wrong? And in the meantime won't let me have privacy or the food I want or my goddamn prescriptions? Red flags, honey. So red. Makes communism look tastefully understated.

It is ridiculous. I agree. All of this is beyond my imagining, and I've seen some strange things. But we're here, and I've been given a job to do. If you cooperate, I do think things will work out for you, and if you find that difficult then I'm here to help you in whatever way I can, as your warden. I'd be having a bloody cow if I were in your shoes.

I don't want things to work out. The only way things "work out" here is by the definition of working out for a bunch of people who took me out of my life and my home, and are imprisoning me and lying to me!
Even if I went back to my apartment today, this is still one of the most fucked up things that's ever happened to me. I didn't agree to any of this, and I am not going to accept that it's my responsibility to change in order to make the experience better.
If you're here to help - fine. Think about who you're helping the most, maybe. You, me, or someone else?

It's not the first time she's considered this messy issue, at least. But it's good he says it.]
You're sharp.
Maybe we should have the rest of this conversation in person. I'm not very quick with this thing yet.

[Pwease?
Hello new landlord, he has never owned his own place in his life so this isn't actually that much of a change.]
